Are these PDF tools really free?
Yes. Every tool here is free with no account, no trial, and no watermark on the output. The site is funded by ads rather than by charging for the tools. There is no paid tier holding features back, so what you see on each page is the whole thing. If a tool cannot do something, we say so on the page rather than putting it behind a paywall.
Do my PDFs get uploaded to a server?
No. Every tool on this site runs in your browser using JavaScript, so the file is read into memory on your own device and never transmitted anywhere. You can test this by loading the tool page, disconnecting from the internet, and using it anyway. It still works, because there was never a server involved in the processing.
Which PDF tool should you use?
Start from the job rather than the tool. Merging, splitting, compressing, and converting are four different operations and picking the wrong one wastes time. If the file is going to someone else, check the size before anything else, since attachment limits cause more failed sends than any other problem. The tool finder quiz asks seven questions and points you at one.
Why does compressing a scanned PDF barely help?
Because a scanned page is already a compressed image sitting inside the PDF container. Our compressor removes unused objects and tidies the file structure, which is lossless and safe, but it cannot squeeze an image that is already squeezed. For scans, rescanning at 200 or 300 DPI in greyscale usually cuts more than any compressor will.
Is PDF an open standard?
Yes. Adobe created the format, but PDF was published as an open ISO standard in 2008 as ISO 32000-1, and PDF 2.0 is ISO 32000-2. Anyone can write software that reads and writes PDF without permission or licence fees, which is why free browser-based tools like these can exist at all. The PDF Association publishes technical documentation on the format.
